Twelve Nights of Christmas at Old Sturbridge Village

This year, the popular “Christmas by Candlelight” evening holiday program has been expanded to twelve nights, over three weekends. I think it used to just run for six evenings, over two weekends.  This is an ideal event for anyone who is sick of all of the modern-day hustle and bustle and commercialism of Christmas.  See the holidays as they were celebrated in 1830′s New England!

Anyhoo, it began this weekend, on Thursday, December 4. You can see all remaining dates, learn more about the program, and purchase tickets HERE. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the evening you wish to attend, either way, they will accept credit cards.

A detailed schedule of events for each evening can be found HERE.

If you are an OSV member, or a resident of Sturbridge, this weekend only, you can enjoy a 50% discount on tickets to the event.  After this weekend, tickets are $12 for members, $14 for non-members.  Children under 3 do not require a ticket.

We’re actually here in Sturbridge right now, at the Super 8 Hotel on Route 20.  This budget hotel is clean and comfortable, and they offer free WiFi (which I am using right now) and a free continental breakfast.  All rooms come equipped with a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, and cable TV.  If you’re a member of AARP, they offer discounted rates for you.  If you have a problem climbing stairs, be sure to ask for a room on the ground floor, as no elevators are available.  Some rooms are wheelchair-accessible, if you book online, select a *handicapped* room.

The Super 8 is about hald a mile from Old Sturbridge Village, and is walking distance to several restaurants, including the Piccadilly Pub.  Up the road a little is Yankee Spirits, one of the coolest beer stores in the world.  We’ll be hitting that place later on today, in search of some new and intersting microbrews to try.

We have tickets to the Christmas by Candlelight event for tonight.  Unfortunately, I dropped the ball and delayed in making reservations for dinner at the Oliver Wight Tavern, now it’s sold out for tonight.  I may give them a call later and see if anyone canceled, or we could try to get in as walk-ins, in the event that someone didn’t show up and didn’t bother to call about it.  Some people are rude like that.

We plan to take advantage of the special discounted shopping while we’re here; see details about that HERE.  The gift shops here are really beautiful; you can find lots of cool stuff that you will EVER find at the local Wally-World or shopping mall!  And all purchases will go to help support the museum.

So I hear it is supposed to snow tonight.  It would be nice to have some snow falling as we stroll the Village, it will juswt add to the holiday atmosphere.  Just as long as it goes away by tomorrow, so we can drive home!
